Exception Only Calendars are used when a Calendar Exception needs to add service that is not otherwise available in the schedule.
When to Use an Exception Only Calendar
Service Extensions
If a Calendar Exception includes additional service to an existing scheduled service (such as extended hours) then an Exception Only Calendar can add additional trips to the Calendar Exception.
Route-specific Services
If a Route is only implemented for certain events (such as a Football Shuttle,) an Exception Only Calendar is an easy way to add that service without having to create a separate Calendar for it and without having to account for different days of the week (in case the Route may be used on varying days of the week.)
Other Service Adjustments
If a service reduction or change is not already available from any grouping of Service Days, an Exception Only Calendar can be used as a substitute.
Create a New Exception Only Calendar
From the Calendar Dashboard select Add Calendar. When naming the Calendar, select Exception Only. This will remove the option to add service periods.
The new Exception Calendar will not have any Service Periods and will only be visible on Schedules and when Show All Calendars is used.
Add Trips to Exception Only Calendar
Adding Trips to Exception Only Calendars is the same as adding them to other Calendars except there is no Service Day selected.
Service Extensions
If using an Exception Only Calendar for extended service hours, only include the additional Trips in the Exception Only Calendar. When scheduling this Service Exception, do not remove any service; just add service from the Exception Only Calendar.
Route-specific Services
If using an Exception Only Calendar for a Route-specific service, make sure that if the Route appears on any other Calendars as well, duplicate service is not created when applying the Calendar Exception.
Other Service Adjustments
If using an Exception Only Calendar for a service change that is not otherwise available from another Service Day grouping, make sure to account for any other ways in which this Exception Only Calendar may be affected. Because Exception Only Calendars are not associated with specific days of the week, multiple Exception Only Calendars may need to be used if the scheduling behavior would change based on which day of the week the service change happens.
Example: A special holiday service is used on federal holidays, but the number of trips is different depending on whether the holiday is on a weekday or a weekend. In this case, two Exception Only Calendars are used: one for holidays that fall on a weekday, one for holidays that fall on a weekend.
